Stratton, Helen.
Walberswick Marshes:
(Date unknown). An original delicate watercolour painting on card (unframed) believed to be by the artist Helen Stratton (24.5 cm x 27.5cm or 9.5 inches x 10.5 inches). Stratton is a highly-regarded illustrator of children's fairy tales. Signed with initials in bottom right-hand corner (active 1891-1925). Framer's plate (which is separate, but which has presumably been on the back of the picture when framed) gives provenance - Walberswick Marshes - Helen Stratton - and her London address: 113 Abingdon Road, Kensington. The picture, in greens and blues, is of a bridge over marshland. Walberswick in Suffolk was a haven for artists in the 1890s and 1900s and is associated with Philip Wilson Steer and his circle of English Impressionists. The card has suffered a little acidification from the original backing boards. Corners worn, one slightly split, some browning to edges, and light brown staining to top left edge, about 1.5cm wide. Otherwise very good. pp. Order No. NSBK-C15466

The Roof of Africa on Wheels:
(Alfresco Books, 1999). Commentary by Jon Amos. Foreword by Chris Bonnington. Jon Amos became a paraplegic following a road accident when just 17. Since then he has advanced the awareness of what a person with a disability can achieve by the challenges he has personally undertaken, raising thousands of pounds for charity in the process. In 1998 he attained an altitude record by someone in a wheelchair - 16,040 feet up Mount Kilimanjaro. This book vividly describes the preparation and actual ascent by Jon and the team. With a fascinating selection of colour photographs, this story of Jon's grit and determination, and the dedicated teamwork of those who accompanied him, makes inspiring reading. Paperback. Real Photographic Suffragette Postcard, Original.
Suffragettes' Parade. March 3rd 1913. Washington DC: Women Representing Foreign Countries
(I. & M. Ottenheimer, Baltimore, MD., 1913). An original real photographic postcard for collectors of original suffragette / Votes for Women memorabilia. On March 3, 1913, the National American Woman Suffrage Association - NAWSA - organised a woman suffrage parade and demonstration in Washington DC. (Pennsylvania Avenue). It was timed to coordinate with Woodrow Wilson's presidential inauguration, the following day. The marchers were jeered and attacked, and had to fight their way through the mob, and the resulting publicity focused the country's attention on the issue of Woman Suffrage. This is an original, contemporary postcard, issued at the time, and shows suffragette women in costume, representing different foreign countries. Photo by Harris-Ewing. On the back of the card, there's a handwritten contemporary message in ink: 'This was taken at 2nd Street - that is the reason they took such a good photo'. The card has not been posted and there is no stamp or postmark. Rear is a little browned and darkened, naturally with age. Postcard. Front of card slightly soiled, and lower right hand corner has suffered damage, the area of a thumb, with actual loss to the photo. Edges & corners slightly worn. Overall good. pp. Order No. NSBK-C15727
