An original real photographic postcard for collectors of original suffragette / Votes for Women memorabilia. On March 3, 1913, the National American Woman Suffrage Association - NAWSA - organised a woman suffrage parade and demonstration in Washington DC. (Pennsylvania Avenue). It was timed to coordinate with Woodrow Wilson's presidential inauguration, the following day. The marchers were jeered and attacked, and had to fight their way through the mob, and the resulting publicity focused the country's attention on the issue of Woman Suffrage. This is an original, contemporary postcard, issued at the time, and shows suffragette women in costume, representing different foreign countries. Photo by Harris-Ewing. On the back of the card, there's a handwritten contemporary message in ink: 'This was taken at 2nd Street - that is the reason they took such a good photo'. The card has not been posted and there is no stamp or postmark. Rear is a little browned and darkened, naturally with age. Postcard. Front of card slightly soiled, and lower right hand corner has suffered damage, the area of a thumb, with actual loss to the photo. Edges & corners slightly worn. Card 5: 'The Modern Inquisition'. From A WSPU poster, depicting the forcible feeding of suffragettes in prison, from the time of the January 1910 General Election. Card 6: From a Women Writers' Suffrage League poster, 1909, in which justice, personified as a woman, defends the female sex from male prejudice. Card 7: 'The Suffragette 1d Weekly'. From a poster advertising 'The Suffragette' newspaper, c.1912. Card 8: 'Meeting of Cabinet Ministers, 1978. Mrs Spankhurst, MP, Delivering her Maiden Speech'. Anti-suffrage, a satirical image from 1906, depicting four middle-aged women sitting around a tea table. A modern reproduction of this suffragette poster, originally published by the Brighton and Hove Women's Francise Society, 191x (exact date uncertain). Printed with archival inks on premium paper (300 GSM, Silk Art, photographic print). Poster (in varying shades of brown and black) shows a woman holding a banner ("Justice Demands the Vote"), next to a shrouded woman holding the scales of justice. They're held back by a rope tied to two posts. Below the steps, a shrouded mother cuddles her baby and another woman in period fashion looks on. The Portcullis: The WSPU Holloway Badge / Brooch
(Modern Replica, 2018).
The original Holloway brooch, of which this is a faithful replica, was designed by Sylvia Panhurst and presented from 1909 onwards to suffragettes who had undergone imprisonment. The portcullis and chains are in a non-precious antique-chrome plate, and the arrow on top, which is the convict symbol, is purple, white and green enamel (the colours of the WSPU). Dimensions: 2cm X 2.5cm. With a secure butterfly clasp to the rear. Presented with a free purple velvet gift-pouch in an attractive gift-bag, which is clear at the front and shiny silver at the rear.
