The Portcullis: The WSPU Holloway Badge / Brooch

The original Holloway brooch, of which this is a faithful replica, was designed by Sylvia Panhurst and presented from 1909 onwards to suffragettes who had undergone imprisonment. The portcullis and chains are in a non-precious antique-chrome plate, and the arrow on top, which is the convict symbol, is purple, white and green enamel (the colours of the WSPU). The original badge from the suffragette era was glass-faced and contained woven fabric in the three suffragette colours.
