Each patch is circular, 45 mm in diameter, and can be affixed easily to garments (jackets, bags, trousers, shirts, handkerchiefs, scarves, skirts, coats, jumpers etc.) with the use of a hot iron and a damp cloth. High quality items in green satin, with white, purple and green silk embroidered stitching detail (WSPU insignia which depicts a Clarion 'Angel' with trumpet). Dimensions: 57mm long and 12mm in breadth at widest point (where main jewel is). With safety pin and chain, and the famous suffragette slogan "Deeds Not Words" engraved on the rear of the main shaft. (These words are the wearer's secret commitment to the "Votes for Women" cause!) Jabot pins were first used to adorn, or fasten, a dangling ruffle known as a jabot worn by men (on shirts) and women (on dresses) during the 1600s. They became important as an article of jewellery from the Edwardian period onwards - the heyday of the British suffragette movement - and flourished through into the 1930s as a special piece of Art Deco decoration. With the appearance of a military-style campaign medal, hunger strike medals were presented to suffragettes by the leadership of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), and honoured those who had gone on hunger strike to to protest against not being recognised as political prisoners. The obverse of the medal is inscribed with the words 'HUNGER STRIKE', whilst the back is blank (where the recipient's name would have been engraved).
