The original badge, on which this is faithfully based, was designed by Sylvia Pankhurst for the suffragette campaign in 1909 / 1910. It incorporates the purple, white and green colour-scheme of the Women's Social and Political Union, and depicts a woman stepping through an iron gate and heavy chains, carrying a 'Votes for Women' streamer. 25mm in diameter. Jabot pins were first used to adorn, or fasten, a dangling ruffle known as a jabot worn by men (on shirts) and women (on dresses) during the 1600s. They became important as an article of jewellery from the Edwardian period onwards - the heyday of the British suffragette movement - and flourished through into the 1930s as a special piece of Art Deco decoration.
