Real Photographic Suffragette Postcard, Original. USA.
Suffragettes' Parade. March 3rd 1913. Washington DC: Starting of Suffragettes' Parade Coming Up Pennsylvania Avenue. March 3rd 1913. Washington DC
(I. & M. Ottenheimer, Baltimore, MD., 1913). An original real photographic postcard for collectors of original suffragette / Votes for Women memorabilia. On March 3, 1913, the National American Woman Suffrage Association - NAWSA - organised a woman suffrage parade and demonstration in Washington DC. (Pennsylvania Avenue). It was timed to coordinate with Woodrow Wilson's presidential inauguration, the following day. The marchers were jeered and attacked, and had to fight their way through the mob, and the resulting publicity focused the country's attention on the issue of Woman Suffrage. This is an original, contemporary postcard, issued at the time, showing suffragette women on horseback. On the back of the card, there's a handwritten contemporary message in ink: "This photo was taken one block from the Capitol. The street was clean at that point. This shows you how wide the avenue is. 120ft from curb to curb". The card has not been posted and there is no stamp or postmark. Rear is browned with a little smudging to ink. No creasing. Front of card slightly soiled, and lower right hand corner has suffered damage, the area of a thumb, with actual loss to the photo. Edges & corners worn. Good. pp. Order No. NSBK-C14974

Stratton, Helen.
Walberswick Marshes:
(Date unknown). An original delicate watercolour painting on card (unframed) believed to be by the artist Helen Stratton (24.5 cm x 27.5cm or 9.5 inches x 10.5 inches). Stratton is a highly-regarded illustrator of children's fairy tales. Signed with initials in bottom right-hand corner (active 1891-1925). Framer's plate (which is separate, but which has presumably been on the back of the picture when framed) gives provenance - Walberswick Marshes - Helen Stratton - and her London address: 113 Abingdon Road, Kensington. The picture, in greens and blues, is of a bridge over marshland. Walberswick in Suffolk was a haven for artists in the 1890s and 1900s and is associated with Philip Wilson Steer and his circle of English Impressionists. The card has suffered a little acidification from the original backing boards. Corners worn, one slightly split, some browning to edges, and light brown staining to top left edge, about 1.5cm wide. Otherwise very good. pp. Order No. NSBK-C15466
